This weekend, you’re probably taking a collective beer and barbecue break.

Because we’re celebrating America’s 250th birthday. 🇺🇸

Against all odds, our scrappy little nation has survived a quarter of a millennium. And if you’ll permit me to brag — I’m celebrating America’s birthday in our nation’s birthplace: PHILADELPHIA!

As many of you know, I moved to the City of Brotherly Love a few months ago — just in time for this half of the century’s biggest bash. And what finer way for me (an unapologetic theatre geek) to honor this occasion than to:

  • See the musical 1776

  • At the oldest playhouse in America

  • Steps away from Independence Hall — the actual building where the musical takes place!

It was magical.

For those who are unfamiliar with the show, it follows the founders of the United States of America in the summer of debates leading up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, famously executed on July 4th, 1776—

And showcases the dramatically different visions these representatives (and their constituents) proposed for the future of the 13 American colonies. Hot diggity, did they argue about it.

In the words of John Adams: This is a revolution, dammit! We’re going to have to offend SOMEBODY!”

Like a goofy mixed-breed mutt, I think one of the reasons we’ve remained so tenacious as a nation —even in the face of all our f*ck-ups— is that our culture was birthed from diverse, opposing, and disruptive ideas.

So in this very short issue of Drunk Business Advice, I offer you a single assignment:

👉 Go make friends with someone you disagree with, and have a chat. It’s good to disagree. And it’s ok to disagree heatedly. But do it face-to-face, then share a beer after. You’ll both grow into more dynamic humans as a result, and your corner of the world will be a little more resilient.

Happy Birthday, ‘Merica. Time to crack open a cold one.

Cheers! 🍻
